Who is the best player in the World? Too difficult a question? Let's make it a little easier by changing it to: 'Who is the best woman player in the World?'
One obvious candidate is Germany's Sabine Auken.

Two of the best known and strongest pairs in the world were in opposition on this deal from the 2008 White House International team tournament. When East opened 1dx South went down the modern road by overcalling. With the vulnerability in their favour East/West were quick to set up a defensive barrage. However, their activity was not lost on Sabine, who was able to deduce that her partner must be void in diamonds. Allying that information to her partner's vulnerable overcall and positive support for her suit she went on to the cold slam. In the other room North/South stopped in game, so the German stars picked up a slam swing.

Have you ever wondered what might be considered the best known bridge deals of all time?
I'll bet you a pound to a penny that the one pictured right would be on everyone's list.

In the 1975 Bermuda Bowl final Italy led North America by 12 IMPs with only five boards to play. In the Open Room the American pair made all the tricks in 6NT.
In the replay the famous Italian combination of Belladonna and Garozzo took seven rounds of bidding to arrive in Seven Clubs!
The closed circuit television showed Belladonna's expressive face move through a series of emotions: anxiety, as he awaited the dummy; consternation when he saw the trump holding; hope when the ten of clubs appeared; tension when West followed slowly. When the king fell under the ace, Belladonna, a devout Catholic, made the sign of the cross and smiled.
The chances of taking all the tricks with that club combination are around 13.5%.

You might cash the ace and lead the two, planning to play the ten. This wins when West has Kxx. You might cash the ace and lead the two, planning to play the queen. This wins when West has Jxx or Jx and is better than playing the ten. This used to be the recognised expert way to play this combination. Bridge expert and computer genius Fred Gitelman discovered that the best line is non-intuitive: start by leading the queen and running it if it is not covered. This loses to KJx with East, but works when West has KJx, so these cancel out. However, this works if either hand has Jx and also if West has Kx. The chances of success are almost exactly 44%.

You should start with the nine from dummy. If East does not cover, let it run. If East covers you play the king and if the eight drops from West, finesse East for the outstanding two honours. This line of play wins three tricks whenever West has the singleton eight or the suit breaks 3-3, offering a 36.7% chance of success.
