Caspari Playing Cards – Deyrolle Butterflies
Deyrolle Butterflies is an elegant twin pack of cards from Caspari with colourful butterflies. The twin pack is smartly presented in a gold drop-lid box. The cards have standard 4-index faces, and the deck contains 52 cards plus 2 jokers.
Paris has many unusual shops, but one of the most unusual has to be Deyrolle, a 170-year old establishment on rue du Bac, not far from the Musee d’Orsay on the Left Bank.
To describe it as a taxidermy shop hardly does it justice. The ground floor looks like a fairly ordinary small home and garden shop (apart from a couple of stuffed gazelles standing on their hind legs and dressed to look like humans). But walking up the stairs is like passing through a time warp. The second storey (which in France is considered the first) appears to have changed little since the store moved to its current location in 1881. It’s dusty, chaotic, and crammed with stuffed animals of all shapes, sizes, and poses, as well as ancient wooden cases full of insects, shells, botanical prints and a variety of curiosities. It’s really a museum masquerading as a store.
This twin pack from Caspari is inspired by the cabinet of butterflies in this curious Parisian shop.
Caspari is a publisher of exquisitely designed and printed paper products, with a reputation earned over seven decades by reproducing the work of established artists and museums from around the world. Originally importing Christmas cards by European artists, Caspari has now expanded to include over 30 different product categories. While the company has grown considerably since 1945, it continues to work with the same European printers and suppliers who originally collaborated with H. George Caspari. Current owner Douglas Stevens and president Lisa Milbank maintain Mr. Caspari’s commitment to fine art and his philosophy of presenting work from classic museum collections and contemporary artists. Caspari products are inspired by museum collections such as the Musee de l’Impression sur Etoffes, The National Gallery, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Williamsburg, The Royal Horticultural Society and the New York Botanical Gardens as well as outstanding private collections and archives. Artists from around the world partner with Caspari to create a portfolio that represents an international approach to design In 2001, Caspari opened its first boutique at 7 rue Jacob in Paris and in November of 2005, Caspari opened in Charlottesville, Virginia.
